Top benefits of using a sunbed

We all love to have that ‘healthy glow’ that a suntan gives but, especially living in the UK, it’s not always possible to achieve it through the natural process of actual sunlight!

The alternatives are to buy specific products to apply to ourselves giving a ‘false tan’, or to get our ‘rays’ in a different fashion – by going to a tanning shop or solarium and using a sunbed.

Here are some of the reasons to consider this form of tanning and the potential benefits:

Gets you that special tan

The most obvious benefit is that it provides us with that tan without actually sitting out in the sun! Whether it be natural or artificial, exposure to sunlight will give us the healthy look we want. Sunbeds effectively mimic the UV radiation that the sun usually provides and produces that elusive golden tan.

Provides our bodies with vitamin D

Whilst there are always warnings, and rightly so, about exposure to UV rays from the sun, it is not always a bad thing!

These rays are harmful in excess – it is actually important, and beneficial, to expose your body to UV radiation, as it helps to produce vitamin D, which is vital for your bodies’ well-being. Vitamin D production for the body is important in a number of ways – maintains bone density and healthy teeth, boosts brain functions, the nervous system and strengthens your immune system.

It also helps regulate insulin levels in the body. A lot of people orally take vitamin D supplements – responsible use of sunbeds allows you to get vitamin D by imitating the ‘natural’ process.

Helps treat problem skin conditions

The health benefits of visiting a tanning shop continue in the form of treatments for certain skin conditions. Problems such as acne, psoriasis, vitiligo, atopic dermatitis and pruritus can all benefit from this treatment, a form of phototherapy, in conjunction with other medical treatment.

In these cases, the treatment can help manage these skin conditions – an important benefit as these skin problems can often have associated mental health issues, like poor confidence and well-being, as well as the actual clinical issues.

Helps treat certain forms of depression

It is well documented now, the damaging effects SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) can have on sufferers during the winter months. This ‘winter depression’ can cause insomnia, irritability, lack of energy or drive. Exposure to sunlight and UV radiation alleviates these symptoms by releasing ‘feel good’ endorphins in the brain and generally lifting someone’s mood and spirit.

Whilst there are a number of benefits connected to the use of sunbeds, you should also be aware that, as with most things, there are potential risks with excessive use. They should be used sensibly and in a controlled manner and environmentIf you have any further questions please don’t hesitate to speak to our team.
